My Dear Friends,

One of our members is a young model who desires a secret diet pill. Read my thoughts on this "magic". Today I’ve also posted some fun photos and video. J.

Let me share my Cyndi’s Secrets™!

Model desires Magic Diet Pill!

Please be aware that any advice in the below entry is not intended to be a substitute for medical or psychological counseling.

Dear Cyndi,
I’m 21 years old and have just started to model. One of my dreams is to work as an auto show model. I have read that you did auto show modeling too. My desire is to lose five pounds. My friends say I am thin but it’s just that I want to have an edge over the competition. Only the best talent can get that kind of work. I think car companies would like me more if I was skinnier. Can you guide me as to what diet pill I should be taking? I’ve heard that lots of girls lose with diet pills but don’t know what I should tell my doctor to give me or what to get over the counter.

Sharon
St. Clair Shores, MI

My Dear Sharon,

Thank you for your question. Yes – is true that I traveled the auto show circuit as a model/narrator. It was a wonderful time of my life. And yes – it is also true that the competition is fierce for this coveted and fun job. However, there is so much more required to achieve auto show model siren status than a “thin” body. So as not to go off topic from your diet pill question I will not go into an auto show modeling job qualification dissertation. That is for another blog entry. Rather I want to address your mindset of diet pill usage and the notion that “thin is better”. My dear Sharon – Thin is NOT always better and in fact being too thin can be extremely unhealthy. Furthermore, taking diet pills can more often than not be downright dangerous!

In recent years, various medications have been released to the public to help lose extreme amounts of weight. These products were promoted as a new type of appetite suppressant. Millions of prescriptions were written. The side effects were so horrible that they had to rightfully be removed from the market. To this day we often hear and see news alert stories splashed across the screen about some weight-loss product that has gone badly. But consumers still want the “magic” and voila – guess what? There are countless new prescriptions, over-the-counter, and herbal remedies available. My best advice is “buyer beware!”

Although people are more skeptical of product safety, they are still lining up to try the latest medication in hopes of dropping those extra, unnecessary pounds. Products used to block satiety (the feeling of fullness), and products used to block absorption of fat and even starches can be found in abundance. Even if you find a good product that is sanctioned by your physician or health care provider, none of these products is marketed to work on its own. They usually recommend making lifestyle changes. This is often ignored like the legal gobbledygook at the end of a car commercial. People forget that, along with taking these “pills,” there’s no escaping the importance of decreasing total food intake and increasing activity levels.

At first, prescription medications were promoted to the severely obese. Even with their so-called side effects, these medications were believed by experts to be less of a health risk than being seriously obese. It was only a matter of time before more prescriptions were being written strictly for cosmetic reasons. Many of these people were less than severely obese. Today these medications are commonly abused. People need to realize that these drugs are powerful and can be harmful if not used properly.

With use of these medications, pounds will be lost. But pounds will stay off only as long as the plan is continued. Once medications stop and old lifestyle habits return, pounds are regained. Medications are only a temporary solution.

Please know that appetite suppressing medications can be harmful and should be used only by patients who are at increased risk of medical problems because of obesity and not for cosmetic reasons to lose weight. They should be used only under a doctor’s supervision.

Not all doctors are perfect.  Just because the FDA regulates how a medication can be advertised or promoted doesn’t mean a doctor properly prescribes it. Talk to more than one physician and do some research on your own regarding diet pills or any medication.  BTW- I do not advocate the idea of diet pills.

Sharon – my advice to you is to look at yourself at the age of 21. Begin now to make positive lifestyle changes that will take you long into your future. Rather than focusing on losing 5 pounds focus on achieving your personal best through proper diet and exercise and a healthy attitude. Talk to your agent about what skills are needed to achieve your professional goals as a top notch auto show model/narrator. Trust me in that it takes a heck of a lot more than a pretty face and a good body. If you get the job you can then smile with the confidence of a young woman driven in a healthy direction. If you do not get the job, press on as life is filled with ups and downs. Just know that it is far more glamorous to live life loving your true beautiful self rather than opting to use drugs than can be dangerous and even deadly. Good luck in all your endeavors. Remember to be open to all possibilities that may lie ahead. Mwah!

You can get this and more diet information in my book THE ONLY DIET BOOK YOU’LL EVER NEED (Adams Media)

Sharon, thanks again for your feedback.  Please keep me posted.

Waiting on Mackinac Island for Sailors! (Fun Pics)

Every year I look forward to the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac Island Sailing Race. This is one of the largest freshwater races in the world. For those who don't know, Mackinac Island is in Northern Michigan. No cars are allowed on this enchanting island. You can either  walk, ride a bicycle, or catch a carriage! The moment you step foot on the island you are transformed into the 1890's. This jewel shines in the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. It is interesting to note that Mackinac Island was the location for the famous movie Somewhere In Time which starred Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour.

Ok – now for my picture story……..

It all begins at the Port Huron, Michigan marina where sailors from around the world along with their boats converge to compete in this prestigious race that finishes on Mackinac Island. This spirited bunch of sailors share a similar goal; and that is to finish first in their respective classes and divisions. Then there are those that are simply happy to how shall I say it?.... Hmmm! ….Just finish!! This most certainly is NOT a race for novices.  For most of the week before the start of the race numerous festivities abound including boat night, family night and all the accompanying festival fair. Naturally, your little Cyndi Sleuth showed up to get the latest. I am pictured below with fellow reporter Wendy Torello from The Times Herald. You can see that we are immersed in deep discussion comparing important nautical notes; e.g. sailor fashion, boat size, and the all important - sailor physiques! :)
blog post photo

I confess to being partial to my favorite boat and that is a J120 named JHawker owned by David Sandlin. I sometimes sail with the JHawker crew and share my Healthy Lifestyle Cyndi’s Secrets™ with these fine sailors.  They fly a battle flag that bears an image of me on it as they sail off into competition.  Below is a photo of me posing with the flag:

When not posing for the camera or sailing you can see me in the shot below doing one of my other JHawker “glamorous”   duties! J

Below I whisper last minute Cyndi’s Secrets™ to the crew of JHawker as they leave the dock.

See JHawker motoring towards the Blue Water Bridge. That’s my flag raised high off in the distance. I am a lucky girl indeed.
blog post photo

It is true that more and more women sail in the Mackinac race. However the majority of sailors are still men. In the next photo you can see some of the sailor widows waving good bye to the men.  They are obviously pining for the men that have left them behind!  - NOT! Truth be told, many of these women are looking forward to some good old fashioned “girl” time! “SEE YA LATER BOYS!!!!”  J

While waiting for the sailors women knit, yarn, meditate  and uh ok----- mingle at the Pink Pony Bar on Mackinac Island. Many tall ship tails have been told at this drinking establishment.  From left to right is  Sue Jasin, Mary Brieden, Danielle Tyler, and Cathy Tyler.

There’s nothing like a pedicure and manicure to help forget about the stress of the mainland. The Lilac Tree Suites & Spa provides all the amenities for such an indulgence and more. Here we see manicurist Sara Undel help Suzanne Cairns from Scotland take in a moment for herself. Suzanne is a race coordinator for the 80 foot sloop, Beau Geste. Her partner, Cameron Ward is the Boat Captain. They are expecting a child later this year.

I almost forgot to mention that part of the fun of going to Mackinac Island is taking the ferry. Of course, I have to take my luggage.  The ferry service I prefer to use is SHEPLERS.  I used to think it was SHLEPPers!!! J Ok---- I am not one to pack light. See Archie Horn below balance my luggage on his bike. Good thing he is strong!

Here I stand outside my hotel room on the balcony of the Lilac Tree overlooking the harbor of Mackinac Island. It’s a perfect place to sip Moet Chandon champagne which was a sponsor of the race.

Most members of Bayview Yacht Club know Jerome Adams as the bar and restaurant manager. He is loved by all. Below he shares a moment of rest with his lovely wife Denise in front of one of the islands many bed and breakfast locations

Sailing folk are not the only ones on the island. There are many tourists from everywhere. I met these 2 lovely sisters while having lunch at the Pink Pony restaurant. That’s Loretta Bradshaw on the left and Marsha Lindenschmidt on the right. They are from the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. These girls told me that they are famous in their home town for being TBRH’s!!! That means TALL, BEAUTIFUL RED HEADS!!! Wow! I was so impressed with their confidence.  That’s what I’m talking about when I preach about having a positive body image. Loretta and Marsha exemplify the Cyndi’s Secrets™ attitude and are a great addition to our membership. Welcome Girls! J

It’s not all play on the island. Many volunteers and others work for hours as the ships come in throughout the day and night. In this shot are Harbormaster David Balcirak (left) and his assistant Dan VanHamme. They use the latest technology to keep the marina in order.

Taking a minute to grab a bite while working are harbor committee members Mary Lou Creamer (left), Kerry Pebbles (center) and Bill Bresser. (right)

The rock stars on the island this summer were the men and women from Hong Kong’s 80 foot yacht “Beau Geste”. They were the first to finish the race. OMG--- this boat was awesome!!!! You can imagine how thrilled I was to be one of the few allowed to hang with the owner and his crew on this amazing yacht! Below is a photo of me with crew members Mathew Chewing (left), Margaret Chan (second from right) and Karl Kwok (right) who is the owner. Kudos to these fine sailors!
blog post photo

While chatting with Karl he shared with me a little known fact. His passion for sailing was actually born at the age of 19 in of all places – Minnesota.  Though he and his family are from Hong Kong he spent his college days as an exchange student in Minnesota. Back then he lived with a sponsoring family that owned a Hobie Cat. Living in the land of a thousand lakes was a dream come true for a very young Karl.  By the looks of the photos of his boat in the pictures below it is safe to say that he is still living his dream!

Below is a shot of Alastair Cambell refilling the fuel on the boat Beau Geste. It holds 100 gallons of fuel. The crew on the other hand fills up off shore with freeze dried food. This helps keep the boat light for faster sailing.

Congratulations to the owner and crew of the yacht Natalie J.
They were the overall first place winners and deserve great praise. What a really beautiful group of people. Below from left to right is a shot of me with the owner Phil O’Niel, Sharon O’Neil, Tim Weiss from the boat Defiance, Sandy O’Neil, Alex Kearney, Meghan Otenbaker and Deb Otenbaker.

This is the “ Cyndi’s shot” because I am posing with my friend Cindy! She had me in stitches, laughing on the island as we waited for the sailors!!

blog post photo

Here I pose with Sandy and Henry Mistele. Henry sailed on the boat Carinthia. I had a blast on the island with Sandy and her friend Linda. In fact, the 3 of us girls took the ferry together on our way to the island. I laughed when we docked at Mackinac Island because Sandy stood in front of the ferry passengers and emphatically asked the entire crowd, “who forgot their backpack?” She turned a deep shade of red when her friend Linda who was sitting next to her raised her hand and declared, “it’s mine!” Somebody in the crowd announced a blonde alert! Good thing we have a sense of humor.
blog post photo

JHawker crew member Trey Rose is elated to have just docked at Mackinac Island after an exciting race. In the picture below it looks like he is saying, “I’m the King of the World” as Leonardo DiCaprio did in  the hit movie “Titanic”. However, it is more likely that he is saying, “hey Cyndi – take my photo”! Trey shamelessly loves to pose for the camera. We all love him.

I had fun dancing at the party. Below is a photo of Shirley Nagel and me. Click the link below to see a fun video of my fancy “footwork”! Looks like the camera man stopped at the Bells Beer Tent before shooting this clip. LOL!

 Other Cool Summer Stuff!

Here are a few shots of some other fun shall I say, “Cyndi Sitings”!   Below are a few photos from a K-EARTH Los Angeles Radio Industry Party! I am pictured with long time LA radio icons Gary Bryan and Lisa Stanley. It was great fun! Woo Hoo! For those who remember – I once was a morning drive traffic reporter at WNIC in Detroit with radio legends Jim Harper who is now at magic 105.1 and Steve Gannon. I loved the job and the people but did not like getting up early to be at work at 5am in the winter! Brrrr!

This picture is sort of blurry but these business associate and friends from Technicolor and Funimation are so much fun that I decided to post the shot anyway. He Needs Sole Mate! Sneaker Advice!

Please be aware that any advice in the below entry is not intended to be a substitute for medical or psychological counseling

Dear Cyndi,

Are you a straight-up-step aerobics person? Well I am ….LOL.  I need to find shoes specific for my game, know what I mean. I have poured over the net and keep hitting the “sketchers wall”……. Can you tell me which shoes to buy? My cross trainers are causing calluses on my feet for sure, and I know there is a brand specific for aerobic workout type shoe(s)!?.

 Bill
Lincoln Park, MI

My Dear Bill,

Thank you for your feedback. When Step aerobics ( a workout that uses an elevated step) was first introduced in 1989 it was a huge hit. In fact I was at the International Fitness Convention when its creator Gin Miller promoted it to those of us in the industry for the first time. I know it is hard to believe this but - before there were step classes, aerobics classes were primarily “dancy”. Step classes paved the way for many new and exciting exercise formats! As a result it is now harder for shoe manufacturers to come up with specific shoes for each aerobic class type. There are just too many.

Manufactures these days are getting away from the “step” shoe category. It has more to do with individual FIT and COMFORT in what is called a “training” shoe based on your individual foot. Eg. The shoe brand New Balance can work for a wider foot than say NIKE but both are great brands.

Let me help you with some tips. Athletic shoes are one workout item you don’t want to buy based on looks. Search for your sole mate – a pair you can be comfortable with and know is the right fit. Start by understanding your own feet. Are they flat? Wide? Do they roll outward or inward from the ankles? If you said yes to any of these questions, you probably need a good arch support. It helps to share your foot needs with a knowledgeable sales representative. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent shoe manufacturers. In addition to fit, look for stability, flexibility, and shock absorption. That just means you can jump up and down and side to side without discomfort. I actually jump and run in the store before I buy. Some places let you live with the shoes for a while before you make a full commitment. Make sure you only walk on the carpet. You can’t return them used. There are even some retail establishments that have you run outside before you buy. Experts watch to see how you wear your shoes so that they can fit you in the appropriate pair.

JUST A FOOT NOTE: Do not exercise in old, beat –up shoes. They offer no support and can cause injury.

If your shoes are in good condition and fit – it could be the socks. Try a padded brand such as Thorlos. Padded socks can protect the feet and prevent blisters and calluses. I swear by them!!!

You can get this and more information in my book TEN MINUTE TONE-UPS FOR DUMMIES (Wiley)

Bill, Thanks again for your feedback.  Please keep me posted.

Several years ago I was fortunate to do some modeling for nationally recognized makeup artist Ronn Charles and Diane Von Furstenberg makeup. Below are some of the photos. This batch in black and white is from the Houston Chronicle. The photo of me in color was just taken recently.  I thought it would be fun to post these because the make-up magic tricks I used back then are just as good today. Sure color and styles may change but classic make-up technique is ageless. Whether you are 19 or 99 you can discover how to take your natural features and make them your personal best.  My case in point – take note of the similarities in my make-up application in this 2010 photo compared to my early day shots.

Kissing a Big Guy in Honor of Liberty!

When I was a little girl my Dad would often take us kids to downtown Detroit on a Sunday afternoon where his welding shop was located. Mom would stay home and prepare our supper which consisted of pot roast beef, roasted potatoes, and carrots and …….OK…….. I’m getting a little bit off topic because mmmmm…. Sunday dinner with the family was soooo delicious and fun! Now looking back, I’m certain Mom must have wanted to shoo us out of the house so that she could focus on cooking our incredibly tasty Sunday meal. There were after all, 10 of us to squeeze around an average size dinner table. Those were good times!

Now- let’s get back to that frequent ride downtown. We always passed Detroit’s most recognizable monument called The Spirit of Detroit. For those who don’t know, it is located at the Coleman A Young Municipal Center on Woodward Ave. It was dedicated to the city in 1958 and is visible in almost all official and unofficial Detroit literature, documents, advertising etc. Below is a photo of The Spirit of Detroit in all its glory.

As a little girl I was greatly impressed with the magnificence of this statue. I didn’t quite understand what it represented but I knew it was much more than a big brawny bronze body. However, it wasn’t until a recent trip to Detroit when I stood in front of what is lovingly called, “the tall Jolly Green Giant”, that I read the inscription on the wall behind this statue and I had an aha moment. The inscription is from the 2nd letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians (3:17).

“Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.”

It also includes the seals of the city and the county. A plaque in front of the sculpture reads:

“Through the spirit of man is manifested in the family, the noblest human relationship.”

Take a little closer look and you will see that “The Spirit of Detroit” is holding in its left hand a gilt bronze sphere emanating rays to symbolize God. In its right hand is a family representing human relationships.

Wow!  When I saw it I got goose bumps!  I just stood there and stared!!! It actually was a spiritual moment and I felt a connection with God, my family, my city, my country, and the whole world!! Oh, I realize that it is not politically correct to mention God in 2010. So if you are not a believer, I ask you not to be offended. You see, I also am not one to shove religion down anyone’s throat as I respect different faiths and viewpoints totally. However, it saddens me to think that if this statue was built in this day and age, some little girl driving downtown with her daddy would grow up to see nothing more than a cold big statue minus the meaningful quote from Corinthians. I’m just saying that although we are told to separate church and state we should not be afraid to embrace the true “Spirit of Liberty”! As the 4th of July gets closer I hope that you can stop and think about what that spirit means to you personally. I’m sure there are lots of opinions on this topic but you know what? That is what is so great about our FREEDOM!  Perhaps the answer lies within statues? Some could be built with meaningful quotes while others could remain silent. After all, can’t all statues just get along? LOL!  Happy 4th of July! J

Below is a shot of me kissing, “The Spirit of Detroit”!  The JOY I feel in my heart this 4th of July stems from my Spirit of Liberty. Mwah!!!!!

Motivating Kids to Eat Healthy at Home!

Now that school is out how can you motivate children to eat healthier at home? Click the link below for some great tips from Registered Dietician Sandy Gloss, RD, LDN, and Master Gardener from the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Inc.   click link here: http://www.southeastdairy.org/view/milklovers/viewquestion/&mytip=318

Cup.Cake's You CAN Eat!

Making the choice to live a healthy lifestyle does not mean that you have to quit eating all those tasty treats you like so much. No way!  For those who have read my book THE ONLY DIET BOOK YOU’LL EVER NEED (Adams Media) you know that I realllllllllly love to eat! So I have developed a sound program that is based on scientific nutritional facts and yet allows you to indulge in your favorite foods without gaining weight. The key is to make mindful choices by exercising moderation and portion control in your diet. If you eat nutrient rich food 80 percent of the time you can make mindful choices to eat small portions of the less nutrient rich foods for 20 percent of the time. Much research shows that people who constantly deny themselves “little” desserts or other edible indulgences end up ultimately overeating and gain more weight! Yikes!

So it is with great pleasure that I share with you a brand new and deliciously decadent bakery in Royal Oak MI called Cup.Cake. Their specialty is – you guessed it – cup cakes!  They also have French macaroons, muffins, cookies, whoopee pies and locally roasted coffee, espresso and specialty teas. Cup.cake’s baked goods range from simple chocolate and vanilla to bold and adventurous flavors, such as mojito, maple bacon and pomegranate.

Please do not think that I recommend a steady diet of any fattening food. Remember it is about portion size and moderation. All too often bakeries offer cupcakes that are the size of a “full sized cake” and enough for 3 people! It’s no wonder we have an obesity problem in our country and in other parts of the world. What I like about Cup.cake is that when you order a cupcake you get a choice between a regular sized cupcake or a perfectly portioned miniature which is enough to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. Even the regular sized cupcake is not going to kill your diet if it’s part of the 80/20 percent diet solution I explained to you above.

I like the fact that Cup.cake’s baked goods are made with the freshest local and organic ingredients that are of the finest quality. Any time I make a mindful choice to splurge on a “little” dessert I look for “quality”!

Below is a photo of one of Cup.Cake’s regular sized cupcakes and a mini.

To add to the charm of this delicious discovery is the fact that Cup.cake is the dream of long-time Royal Oak residents, brother and sister, Leon Ochoa and Eva Watt. It’s not a large chain but a close-knit, small family business. I was invited to the grand opening recently and was impressed with the entrepreneurial spirit displayed by Leon, Eva and their children as they lovingly saw to it that every customer was satisfied. And let me tell you the place was packed …. With good reason! According to Leon, “We guarantee freshness, flavor and service!” He also went on to tell me that they bake the treats at the store daily and if there are any leftovers they donate them to an organization called Forgotten Harvest that helps to feed the hungry. To add to the experience of visiting the bakery customers can enjoy watching the chefs decorate the cup.cakes at the delightful decorating station. This is a big hit with children. Below is a photo of owners Leon Ochoa and Eva Watt.

Cup.Cake can custom make treats for any special occasion. Below is a cupcake tower that served as a delicious wedding cake for one of their satisfied customers. Leon told me that he was still able to accommodate some orders for upcoming 4th of July parties!

Traveling Fit-trip Checklist!

Summer becomes official this week which means many will be traveling. Use my nifty fit-trip checklist to help you leave town on the road to wellness:

Call the hotel before you arrive to see about a gym: If you are staying in a hotel, try to find one that has a gym. Not all hotel gyms are created equal. Some have state-of-the-art, full- facility spas, whereas others consist of nothing more than one beat up bike. You can also ask the hotel operator for the name of a nearby gym. Many gyms offer privileges for hotel guests.

Pack workout garb:   Always throw something in your suitcase that you can move in. Sweat pants, t-shirt, shorts, and a sweatshirt are easy to pack. Don’t forget the gym shoes. I travel so much that when I return from a trip I automatically replace my worn workout wear with a fresh set that I keep in the suitcase. If a last minute trip comes up, there is no way I leave without my fitness garb. (Unless I take a different suitcase – OK, it happened once. I resorted to working out in my room.)

Consider the weather:  Don’t get caught out of town with nothing more than a sleeveless muscle tank or jog-bra top. These items may shine on a hot sunny day, but they don’t fair well should the temperature drop. Since out-of-town fitness often takes you outside, opt for clothes that you can layer. I like to log onto www.weather.com before I travel. Punch in the city you are going to for the most up-to-date weather information.

Bring workout DVD’s or use on demand services:  Many hotels offer in-room DVD players or on demand digital services. Take advantage of these services whenever you can. There are a number of DVD’s that work great in a limited amount of space. Yoga, Pilates and Toning programs are especially nice when there is not much room. My favorite collection of fitness DVD’s comes from Collage Videos at www.collagevideo.com   Of course, I invite you to try my Cyndi’s Secrets fitness DVD collection at www.starglow.com If you are staying with friends, you can bring a fitness DVD along, and all of you can join in. Leave it there as a thoughtful gift.

Take a reward:  Always travel with something that is personally rewarding to you. I never leave town without a candle and bubble bath. These are simple little pleasures that I look forward to after my out-of-town workout. You might enjoy a favorite mystery novel or old-fashioned stationery to write to a loved one. The calming effect is just as important for health as any workout can be. It can also keep you motivated and able to manage stress better.

Pack tubing and bands: Exercise tubing and bands are perfect for traveling. They offer resistance, take little space and fit neatly in a suitcase.

Chatting With Leonard Maltin !

One of the perks of my job is meeting so many interesting people. Leonard Maltin is one such individual. Here is a shot of Leonard and me chatting about the changing publishing industry at a book festival in LA. He and I were both promoting our books. He is famous for his bestselling Movie Guides. We both agree – LONG LIVE BOOKS! J

Nikki Corvette + Blondie Rock! (Fun Photos)

Once upon a time there were sugary singing girl groups commanding the radio airwaves. The syrupy sound was certainly sweet to listen to. Docile tones are always pleasing to the ear. However, no other female singing style in the land was allowed to be heard. This made it frustrating for some women musicians who wanted to explore their music range. If a woman wanted to make rock music for example, she’d have to forget any record deal because tough sounding rock bands were just for bad boys. Girls who wanted to perform an edgier sound were literally scolded and told, “You can’t play!”  Then came Detroit’s own Nikki Corvette. For those who don’t know Corvette, she is a singer/songwriter who rose to fame in the ealy 80’s as one of the first women to lead and succeed in a girl rock band. The group was called Nikki and the Corvettes. While interviewing Nikki recently over coffee at Panera Bread Co. in Southgate, she told me she never was afraid of any naysayers. Her feisty response to them was,” yes- I CAN play, nah, nah, nah!”   J Her persistence paid off. Nikki went on to great success and international acclaim. Till this day she is credited with influencing major girl groups such as the GoGos and the Donnas. In fact the Donnas wrote a line in their song, “Gimmie my Radio” that goes: “ I want to be like Nikki Corevette”.

Nikki’s story is not a phony fairy tale (No way! She is after all a Detroit girl) but it has a great ending….. Or I should say beginning.

(photo of Nikki and me at Panera Bread Company)

It was 1978 and a young Nikki Corvette was madly in love with rock music. She dreamed of singing and writing songs but wasn’t sure she was any good. Corvette immersed herself in the burgeoning underground world of Detroit music and in no time knew everybody. Obviously, she had a great voice and talent because before she even had a structured band “rehearsal” Nikki had a 3 month “gig” at what was once called THE RED GRAPE club in Detroit. The club owner needed a group ASAP and put together a band of musicians. To Nikki’s surprise he offered her the lead job. The newly formed NIKKI AND THE COREVETTES played to a packed house every night. She may have been terrified but this flaming red head never looked back and the rest is history. Nikki and the Corvettes released several great songs including,”I wanna be your girlfriend.”, “Girls Like Me”, and “Backseat Love”.

During our interview I wanted to get the Cyndi Scoop about this fascinating woman. You see Nikki is not just some bad a_ _ broad who makes rock music. She is actually cute and fun with a tough Detroit edge. That dichotomy, I believe is what makes her music so fun and yet edgy. Her style is interesting to describe. Many call it bubblegum punk, power punk or power pop! Whatever you want to call it – it works!  She shared with me that though she lived in LA for awhile it is living in Detroit and being surrounded by the people in the city that gives her an edge creatively. “Detroiters are survivors!  “There is a toughness that you have to have in order to survive in Detroit.” she stated.

Nikki and the Corevettes had a great run in the early 80’s. However, just as what happens to many musicians Corevette got burnt out on the industry. She never tired of music but began to hate the business and just had to quit. During her hiatus she still dabbled in songwriting and singing. Much of her time was spent writing a resource book about musicians that have passed on. Here fans could find rock star gravesites and interesting trivia about their favorite late musician. It was published in 1996 and was titled ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN (Berkley Press)

The new millennium hit and Nikki re-released her popular song, “Girl Like Me” on CD. A new generation of listeners was born coupled with her long time devoted fans. Everyone wanted more Corevette! This prompted numerous appearances and the creation of a new band called Nikki Corevette and the Stingrays. During this time she wrote and performed one of my favorite Nikki Corvette songs entitled, BACK TO DETROIT. You can listen and buy it along with other great numbers on Nikkis myspace page.  http://www.myspace.com/nikkiandthecorvettes

These days Nikki has paired up with another popular Detroit rocker; Amy Gore. Together they formed a group called GOREVETTE. Below is a shot of the band performing. From left to right is Amy Gore on lead guitar, Nikki Corevette, and Lianna Castilla on bass guitar. These chicks really rock!

Detroiters can be proud to share our Nikki with the world. Below is a shot of her recent performance in Japan where she has a huge following.

The following picture is of a popular punk rock Japanese magazine called DOLL. Don’t you just love the covergirl Nikki?!

Nikki is very grateful for her international stardom but she makes it clear that at her core she is still a Detroit rocker chick. I think the cover of the local REAL DETROIT magazine pictured below makes a strong point. Did you catch the word- real

Nikki Corvette and GOREVETTE are getting ready to go on tour with BLONDIE (Deborah Harry) this summer. Sounds like great fun! Woo Hoo! I wonder if they need an air guitar player. Hmmm! Hint! Hint!

Below is a youtube video of GOREVETTE performing the lead song from their new CD called LUSTFULLY YOURS! Enjoy!

Nikki’s Singing Workout!

Performing on stage takes a tremendous amount of energy and cardio endurance. When I interviewed Nikki I had to ask her if she had any sort of fitness routine to help with her stamina. She was refreshingly honest about how challenging staying in shape can be when you travel from city to city and gig to gig. Sometimes after a show you just want to crash and eat everything in site. Her one salvation is what she calls her singing workout. Before performing Nikki gets on a treadmill and listens to a CD of her upcoming performance set. While running at a steady pace she blasts out her upcoming show at the top of her lungs.

To help Nikki with her workout on the road I suggested the above Traveling fit-trip check list from my book TEN MINUTE TONE-UPS FOR DUMMIES (Wiley) as well as THE ONLY DIET BOOK YOU’LL EVER NEED (Adams Media).  Both are jam packed with exercise and diet tips to help make staying in shape on the road a little easier.

 Revenge of the 80’s Radio!

Whenever I find a gem that I can share with our Cyndi’s Secrets Society I am happy to do so. This one is for lovers of 80’s music. The internet radio show is called REVENGE OF THE 80’S RADIO. Chris Cordani is the popular NY radio host who brings this wonderful show to life. Below is a link to a previous segment where he has an extremely informative and entertaining interview with Detroit’s own Nikki Corvette. Click the link and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the 2nd hour for Nikki's interview. Come back regularly for more 80’s music and great stuff.

blog post photo Shhhhh! Cyndi’s Secrets™

My Dear Friends,

Generally I try to keep my blog entries fun and informative. However, there are times when sadness strikes home. To act as if everything is fine would be misleading. I’m referring to a terrible accident that occurred at Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, MI during a national sailing race called the NOODS. Many in my sailing family were affected. Though each of us is faced with grief at one time or anothe
